Central Scholarship Announces Partnership with Baltimore Community Foundation for Trade and Apprenticeship Funding

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was an essential part of Baltimore’s transportation system and served many people across the Mid-Atlantic region. When it collapsed in March 2024, the effects were felt far and wide. Six lives were lost, and the Port of Baltimore, one of the busiest ports on the East Coast, was shut down, causing significant delays and economic setbacks.
This tragic event also drew attention to a larger issue: the need to better maintain our roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. It demonstrated the importance of having trained workers who know how to build, repair, and keep these systems before problems arise.
To help meet that need, Central Scholarship, with the support of the Baltimore Community Foundation, created the Francis Scott Key Bridge Trade and Apprenticeship Scholarships. These scholarships support Maryland residents who want to learn a skilled trade and start a career in fields that help keep our communities running safely and smoothly.
Addressing Infrastructure Needs Through Education
Maryland's infrastructure challenges are not isolated to the Key Bridge. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers' 2024 Maryland Report Card, 48% of roads are in poor or fair condition, and approximately 250 bridges are deemed structurally deficient. These statistics underscore the urgent need for trained professionals in construction, welding, electrical work, and other trades crucial for infrastructure development and maintenance.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge Trade and Apprenticeship Scholarships
Recognizing the dual need to support individuals and strengthen infrastructure, Central Scholarship's program offers financial assistance to Maryland residents pursuing certifications in high-demand trades. With over $500,000 in support, the scholarships cover training costs for careers such as:
- Welding: Approximately $3,000
- Construction Management: Approximately $5,000
- Electrician Certification: Approximately $7,000
These programs not only provide individuals with valuable skills but also directly contribute to rebuilding efforts, including projects like the restoration of the Key Bridge.
Building a Resilient Future
Investing in trade and apprenticeship programs is more than an educational initiative; it's a strategic move to ensure Maryland's infrastructure is resilient and its workforce is prepared. By equipping residents with the necessary skills, the state can address current deficiencies and proactively prevent future crises.
