One Week Left To Apply

Posted: 04.21.14

Shoe City logoOur general application is closed as of April 1st, but one scholarship application remains open for undergraduate students until 11:59 pm on April 30th.  Central Scholarship awards four students with a Shoe City Scholarship every year.  The students must be graduating high school seniors from Maryland or Washington, D.C.  Eligible applicants should have been accepted to and planning to attend college full-time in the Fall of 2014.  Preferences toward applicants who are residents of Baltimore City, Prince George’s County, and Washington, D.C.  Click here to apply.  If you already applied in the general application that closed on April 1st, you are automatically eligible for Shoe City Scholarship funding and do not need to apply again.  This separate scholarship application is for students who did not already apply for a general application between January 1 and April 1.

Listen to what last year’s Shoe City Scholar, Ana Gudiel, has to say about receiving her scholarship.  Ana is a freshman at The University of North Carolina. In high school, Ana seized every opportunity to be involved. She was in the National Honor Society, the Junior Army Reserve Officer Training Corps, the lacrosse team, and the bowling team. She also worked summers at CentroNia, a bilingual organization that supports more than 1,500 children in the Washington DC and Montgomery County area. She devoted one day out of her week to tutor kids who needed help in math and science. These have been Ana’s favorite subjects in school. She chose to major in forensic science because it allow her to play a role in providing closure to victims’ families in solving investigations. She looks forward to using her bilingualism with victims of violence who do not speak English.

Sha-Keara, Featured Scholar

Central Scholarship recipient Sha-Keara Pinkney

This month’s featured scholar is Sha-Keara Pinkney, a junior at Hollins University in Virginia.   She remembers being in kindergarten and a teacher asked her who she wanted to be when she grew up.  “Lawyer,” was her response and she continues to strive toward that goal to this day.  Originally from Baltimore City, She-Keara remembers being her family’s helping hand in their single mother household.  She writes that her goal was to become “a lawyer with the characteristics of a social worker.”  Since then, she has worked tirelessly and pursued a bachelor’s degree in sociology.  In high school, Sha-Keara was lucky to attend Cristo Rey Jesuit High School where the work study program set her up for success.  She worked at a Baltimore City law firm for two years.  Sha-Keara continued her law education once she went to college by interning with a judge at the District Court of Maryland.

In 2013, Sha-Keara was awarded with a scholarship that was funded by the Mayor of Baltimore City, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.  Due to the donation of the mayor’s Oriole Park at Camden Yards skybox in the summer of 2013, Central Scholarship raised enough money to help a Baltimore City student afford college.  To learn more about our work, please visit our testimonial page or read our reviews on greatnonprofits.org
