Every scholarship application tells a story, and collectively, they reveal the real challenges Maryland students face. At Central Scholarship, we support hundreds of applicants each year, giving us a unique insight into student needs.
As living costs rise and economic pressures intensify, students across Maryland are facing new obstacles that impact their ability to enroll and graduate.
These are a few of the challenges we’re seeing right now.
Rising rent prices have become a large barrier for students in both college and career training programs. We often see:
Housing insecurity creates a domino effect of missed classes, increased stress, and slower academic progress. Our scholarships often provide the stability needed to help students remain housed and enrolled.
Many Maryland students rely on public transit systems that don’t always align with class or work schedules. Others own cars but struggle to afford gas, repairs, or insurance.
For students in programs such as nursing and health professions; construction and the trades; early childhood education; EMT; and public safety -- having reliable transportation is not optional it’s required.
Central Scholarship helps students stay mobile, which directly increases their ability to graduate on time.
Textbooks, uniforms, tools, and equipment continue to rise in cost. Welding students require helmets and gloves. Nursing students need specific shoes and stethoscopes. Art and design students need digital tools, software, and supplies.
We see students who are accepted into strong programs but cannot afford the materials required to begin or continue coursework. Our funding model addresses these realities, not just tuition.
While financial stress is a major factor, emotional stress plays a role too. Students are balancing multiple priorities, such as:
Maryland students are resilient — but many are exhausted.
Central Scholarship’s support helps reduce pressure by removing the financial obstacles that amplify burnout.
Many applicants are first-generation college students navigating unfamiliar systems. They need help understanding tuition bills, financial aid, loan terms, program requirements, and career pathways.
Through our communications and partnerships, Central Scholarship serves as a trusted resource, helping students make informed decisions that support long-term success.
Understanding these challenges allows us to respond quickly, allocate funding responsibly, and advocate for Maryland students who are working tirelessly toward a better future.
