Maryland Day is a time to recognize the moments, movements, and communities that have shaped our state. From its earliest beginnings to the vibrant, diverse communities we see today, Maryland’s story has always been one of resilience, progress, and possibility.
At Central Scholarship, this day serves as a reminder that history isn’t just something we look back on, it’s something we continue to build.
Education has played a defining role in Maryland’s growth, though access has evolved over time. In the colonial era, formal education was largely reserved for wealthy families. Over time, the state expanded opportunities through institutions like the University of Maryland and community efforts such as Rosenwald Schools that helped bring education to underserved communities.
Today, Maryland continues that commitment through financial aid programs administered by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, including the Howard P. Rawlings Educational Excellence Awards, which support students pursuing higher education across the state.
For more than 100 years, Central Scholarship has helped Maryland students overcome financial barriers through scholarships, interest-free loans, and career training support.
In 2017, Maryland became the first state to ban scholarship displacement through Maryland House Bill 266, ensuring students can keep the full value of the scholarships they earn, a landmark change championed by Central Scholarship.
As we celebrate Maryland’s legacy, we remain focused on expanding opportunity and advancing equity in education. When Maryland students succeed, Maryland thrives.
Happy Maryland Day from all of us at Central Scholarship, here’s to honoring our roots while boldly investing in the future.
